Introduction
A detailed survey of the total glaciated area in Norway has not been performed since the glacier inventories were compiled in the mid 1980s for southern Norway and start of the 1970s for northern Scandinavia. A new updated survey of the Norwegian ice masses is required in order to get an overview of the present state of the glaciers and the changes of them. Satellite sensors enable (near) global coverage of glaciers. As part of the Global Land-Ice Measurements from Space (GLIMS) project (www.glims.org) NVE has started work with a new remote-sensing-based inventory for Norway.
Work outline
Satellite high-resolution optical imagery provide for mapping the extent of the glaciers. The data will mainly be from Landsat (TM and ETM+). From these measurements changes in glacier area and length will be calculated, by comparison with previous inventories and topographic maps of the glaciers. Orthophotos from the Norwegian mapping authorities (Statens kartverk) are used for training and verification. The glacier mapping methods are described in Andreassen et al. (2008), Paul and Andreassen (2009), and Hausberg and Andreassen (2009).
Acknowledgements
The work in Norway is funded by NVE and partly by the Norwegian Space Centre and the European Space Agency (ESA) within the projects Cryorisk and CryoClim. Statens Kartverk has provided orthophotos. The work of F. Paul is supported by a grant from the ESA project GlobGlacier (21088/07/I-EC). A. Kääb is thanked for his advice when starting the new remote-sensing derived inventory.
