The National Lake Database contains information about Norwegian lakes larger then 2500 m2.
Lakes in the database are identified by a unique National Identification Number (vatn_lnr). As of 2011 the database contained approx. 240 000 lakes. Lakes have been identified using the Norwegian Mapping Authority’s (Statens kartverk) digital main map series N50 Kartdata (accuracy matching map scale 1:50 000). The National Identification Numbers enable storage, systematic registration and retrieval of water related information and ensure correct connection with other national databases.
Lake Database Attribute Table Content
The Lake Database’s Identification Numbers ensure that all parties refer to the same lake and are used in national and regional databases related to water use, management, environment, pressure etc. The database is updated and maintained by NVE through co-operation with the Norwegian Mapping Authority and the Identification Numbers have become one of the attributes of the digital main map series N50 Kartdata (1:50 000) and N250 Kartdata (1: 250 000). The Lake Database is updated and maintained by NVE in collaboration with the Norwegian Mapping Authority.
The data are available for users in the map application NVE Atlas (atlas.nve.no).
The Lake Database is also available on the WMS format (Web Map Service). The list of WMS is available here, or at the National Map Portal www.geoNorge.no established by Norge digital/Norway Digital.
