The National Catchment Database (REGINE)

12.05.2011 | 10:39

REGINE divides Norway into major and subordinate reference units along river systems, basin boundaries and the coastline.

The units in REGINE are hydrometric reference areas and subdivisions of these. Each unit is identified by a unique hydrometric reference number/ National Identification Number (vassdragnr). All rivers longer than 10 km and lakes bigger than 1 km2 have a defined REGINE unit, as well as hydropower reservoirs and tunnel inlet points. As of 2011 there were approx. 20 000 REGINE units in the database.

REGINE is available on NVE’s map application NVE Atlas (http://atlas.nve.no).

REGINE is a tool for efficient administration of water resources and hydropower resources, as watersheds are logically and precisely defined and categorised.

REGINE Database Attribute Table Content

  • National Identification
  • Name of River or Lake
  • Number (vassdragnr)
  • Hydrometric Reference Area No.
  • Name of Hydrometric Reference Area
  • REGINE unit area (km²)
  • REGINE unit Runoff 1961-1990 (million m³ per year)
  • Total upstream area (km2)
  • Total upstream runoff 1961-1990 (million m³ per year)
  • Average runoff 1961-1990 (litre/second km²)
  • Average runoff 1930-1960 (litre/second km²)
  • Name of lowest point in REGINE unit
  • Name of highest point in REGINE unit

REGINE’s National Identification Numbers ensure that all parties refer to the same area and enable automatic aggregation of upstream area for given points in the watershed, and are used in national and regional databases related to water use, management, environment, pressure etc.

The subdivisions in REGINE form a hierarchy, each level more detailed than the last. This hierarchical classification enables users to –

  • perceive Norway’s hydrometrical system as made up of big and small units within the major reference areas.
  • link information to areas of catchment systems and to be able retrieve that information when accessing either aggregated or disaggregated areas.
  • provide basic information for analyses related to water resources; hydrological analysis, flood management, hydro power potential, management of drinking water, irrigation potential etc.

REGINE is updated and maintained by NVE and available for users in the map application NVE Atlas (atlas.nve.no).

REGINE is also available on the WMS format (Web Map Service). The list of WMS is available here, or at the National Map Portal www.geoNorge.no  established by Norge digital/Norway Digital.
