NVE ensures the socially responsible use of surface water and groundwater. We will strive to protect the environmental quality of water resources, and collect and disseminate information on water, river systems, snow, ice and glaciers.
Norway has a great diversity of river systems, which have different hydrology, dimensions, topography, materials and ecology. The use of river systems and groundwater often leads to different forms of intervention, whether it’s technical development, damage prevention or recreation.
We aim to safeguard society against loss and damages caused by flood, erosion and landslides, whilst ensuring a high-quality flood warning system.
Different legal frameworks and well-founded decisions protect the various interests. The legal frameworks for which we are responsible regarding protection of river systems are the Water Resources Act, Watercourse Regulation Act and Industrial Licensing Act.
