NVE promotes the responsible use of surface water and groundwater. We work to protect the environmental quality of water resources, and we collect and disseminate information and knowledge regarding water, river systems, snow, ice and glaciers.
Norway has a wide diversity of rivers, with differing hydrology, size, topography, geology and ecology. The use of surface and groundwater systems often takes the form of intervention, such as technical developments, protection against damage and recreational activities.
We aim to safeguard society against loss and damages caused by flood, erosion and landslides, whilst also ensuring good emergency preparedness.
We use different legal frameworks and well-founded decisions to protect various interests. The legal frameworks which we are responsible for regarding the protection of river systems are the Water Recources Act, the Watercourse Regulation Act and the Industrial Licensing Act.
