NVE has an important role in emergency preparedness for floods and river accidents. NVE issues flood warnings and gives advice to local municipalities, police and rescue services, dam owners and regional authorities in a flood situation.
NVE may instruct dam owners or owners of other river constructions to operate these so as to reduce the risk of damage. NVE can also offer financial, and in some cases material, assistance for physical measures that can reduce the risk of damage.
In an emergency situation it is NVE regional offices that keep contact with local municipalities, police and rescue services, dam owners and regional authorities. In addition to their role in an emergency situation the regional offices also advise local authorities on flood preparedness plans.
