The power situation week 4 2010

03.02.2010 | 14:00

High power prices in Norway. Lower temperatures and increased consumption, especially in Southeast Norway and Sweden, contributed to increased average power prices in all the Norwegian elspot areas last week.

The weekly prices increased the most in Mid and North Norway. In these elspot areas the price increased by 13.8 øre to 54.6 øre/kWh. The price in Southeast Norway increased by 7.8 øre to 47.7 øre/kWh. In addition to increased consumption, lower import capacity from Southwest Norway contributed to the price increase. In Southwest Norway the average weekly price was 38.1 øre/kWh. That is an increase of 0.4 øre.

The generation capacity in the Swedish nuclear power system is below 70 percent of maximal capacity. Together with low inflow and reservoir levels, this contributes to significant price increases when temperatures fall and demand increases.
