The power situation week 31 2011

10.08.2011 | 14:00

Uneven power prices. The power prices in the southern and northern areas of Norway moved in opposite directions last week.

In East-, Southwest- and West-Norway the average price for the week was 25.4 øre/kWh, which is a decrease of 1 percent from the week before. Mid- and North-Norway had an average price of 31.2 and 31.7 øre/kWh, which is, on the contrary, an increase of 14 and 16 percent.

The uneven price movements were caused by reduced exchange capacities between Norway and Sweden, as a consequence of maintenance in the Swedish power grid. The capacity reductions led to constrained production in the southern areas of Norway. Power prices therefore kept at the same low level as the week before throughout the week.

As a result of the reduced import from Sweden, Mid-Norway had to produce more of its own consumption than the week before. However, lower water-inflow to the reservoirs in the area probably led to reduced run-of-river production. This gave higher power prices.

The increased price in North-Norway can be explained by the same mechanisms as in Mid-Norway. Increased consumption in the area also increased the demand, and together with increased export to Sweden this may have led to the price difference between Mid- and North-Norway.
