Physical protection works such as levees, embankments and erosion protection can reduce the risk of damage to housing and infrastructure posed by floods, erosion and landslides.
NVE gives planning and financial assistance to build physical protection works where existing buildings and infrastructure are at risk of damage. NVE gives priority to planning and financing projects that have a high benefit compared to costs and that do not have a negative impact on the environment.
Projects can be initiated by the local landowner, the local municipality or by NVE after flood inundation or quick clay mapping. NVE can also give planning and financial assistance to remedial and restoration works where there has been a negative impact on the river environment by previous protection works.
The annual spending on flood and erosion protection and remedial measures is approximately 10 - 12 mill EUR.
